Last week a friend threw me a curve ball and asked, "What would our lives be like without music?" At the time, I really didn't have anything particularly smart to contribute to the discussion (and still don't...SORRY). The funny thing is, during one of my "reflections" today, I thought of a spinoff to her question. What would our lives be like if we grew up listening to music that's different than what we actually listened to? Would things be different than they are now? Think about if you didn't grow up listening to the Beatles, or the Carpenters, or even (dare I say it) Richard "Don't Call Me Dick" Marx. Would YOU be the same person?!
I DON'T think I would. Since I was in my mom's tummy, I was raised (and when I say raised, I mean reared--I know you raise cattle and not people) on the Bee Gees and the Stylistics. Their music is a reflection of my personality--the good, the bad, the happy, and the sad.
I've said it many time before--I'm not a musician or connoisseur. I'm just some guy on his laptop blogging about stuff that sounds good to me and illustrates my mood at a particular moment in time. Without getting too preachy, what I'm trying to say is that music IS IMPORTANT and IS something that EVERYONE could appreciate in some form or another. You can't say that about politics or religion (but you can say it about food...wait let me take that one back).
Maybe "How Deep Is Your Love" or "You Make Me Feel Brand New" didn't play an integral role in shaping my core values or beliefs, but I do know that they'll provide me with memories for a lifetime. All I'm trying to say is don't underestimate the importance of music in your life. Whether your cup of tea is country, jazz, or classic hip-hop, find time to appreciate the tunes that tell the stories we feel and can relate to--ones that many of us are unable to tell on our own.
EDITOR'S NOTE: I promised myself when I started this blog that I wouldn't use "Best Of" or "Greatest Hits" albums but decided that I would make an exception just once (thank you, James Ingram--I"ll blog about you in the near future).
